Funders award grants solely for charitable purposes for efforts involving social, environmental, and economic drivers of the reduction of global animal agriculture. 50by40 connects partners to various funders who work in the environmental, health, global development (especially Global South), and philanthropy sectors.
Only 50by40’s partners are eligible to submit grant applications via our WeChangers platform.
Although only 50by40’s partners are eligible to submit grant proposals, collaborative joint proposals between partner and non-partner organisations are welcomed and accepted for review. These joint proposals must be submitted by the official partner organisation.
50by40 does not fund individuals, scholarships, or unincorporated associations. Only registered organisations that are partners of 50by40 can apply for grants through the WeChangers platform.
Partners can apply for funding by creating a profile and submitting a proposal on the WeChangers granting platform. Funding rounds are held four times each year. Currently, 50by40 considers all proposals dealing with social, environmental, and economic drivers towards the reduction of global animal agriculture, but there may be targeted funding rounds in the future. Can I apply for funding for general operational expenses or continuation of existing programmes? + –
Yes, you can apply for both. The WeChangers platform accepts proposals involving new projects, existing projects in need of renewal, existing projects in need of expansion, general operating expenses, and pilots.
50by40 is committed to working collaboratively with grantees – treating them as partners and seeking to facilitate rather than dictate what they do. As part of that commitment, we aim to provide long-term general operating support whenever possible and fund grantees’ true costs when making restricted project or programme grants. We do not employ a fixed minimum or maximum rate for indirect costs. When proposals require grantees to submit budgets, we ask that proposals reflect the prospective grantees’ actual indirect costs for the project or programme in question.
I’m not sure if a prospective proposal idea would be a good fit for 50by40 funders. How can I determine the viability of a concept? + –
We accept two types of proposals: Expressions of Interest (EOIs) and Full Proposals. EOIs present an opportunity for applicants to gauge interest from funders through the submission of a significantly abridged proposal. If applicants have uncertainty about the viability of a proposal idea, they should consider submitting EOIs to save the time and resources that might otherwise have gone into crafting a full proposal that is not of interest to funders.
Applicants must be a nonprofit organisation, be a partner of 50by40, and be submitting a proposal that involves social, environmental, and economic drivers of the reduction of global animal agriculture. As the funding cycle has not yet begun, there is no average grant size yet. First-time recipients may submit proposals requesting up to USD $100,000, and successful projects will have the opportunity to receive follow-up funding. Exceptions may be considered for joint proposals, previous grant recipients, or exigent circumstances.
Yes to both. 50by40 will allow multi-year proposals on the WeChangers platform, and you can submit multiple proposals during the same funding round.
No. Submission of a proposal does not guarantee publication for consideration by funders. Once proposals are submitted, they will be reviewed by 50by40 to ensure they meet their requirements. Specifically, proposals will be evaluated on the appropriateness of their topic and adherence to our requirements. Proposals submitted anytime during the submission period will be reviewed regularly so that applicants can make any adjustments that may be necessary for consideration during that funding round. If a proposal is submitted during the last few days of the submission period and requires substantial revision, it may not be considered for that particular funding round.
50by40 holds quarterly funding rounds. Each round includes five weeks in which partners can submit proposals, one week for approval and publication by 50by40, and six weeks in which funders can review proposals and make decisions about which ones to fund. Possibly. Funders may connect with you directly on the WeChangers platform in order to discuss elements of your proposal or to discuss next steps to funding your needs. However, the discretion is solely up to the funders.
We have an existing relationship with some 50by40 funders. Do we still need to apply via the WeChangers platform? + –
Yes. Funders desire a central hub for reviewing and funding proposals, so unless you have worked out an external alternative arrangement, plan on submitting your proposal to the platform.
Yes. WeChangers has built-in restrictions that protect funders from uninvited contact. Funders will have the authority to contact any person on 50by40’s WeChangers platform, but partners seeking funding can only contact them if invited. Additionally, funders will have the option to set up an anonymous profile if they desire to remain anonymous until a decision has been reached about funding.
Each organisation has the option to select the level of visibility for their proposal. All proposals public to 50by40 members will appear in a collection of proposals on the WeChangers platform, though there is an option to hide proposals if desired.
Yes, 50by40 requires a final report at the completion of your grant work. We have a standard final report template for your convenience. Individual funders will have access to this final report once complete, but may request additional information at their discretion. For existing partners, you can submit your final report here. Final reports must be submitted within 60 days of the end of the grant term, unless your grant agreement has specified a different due date.
